Various complications arise during different phases of woman’s reproductive cycle.The article describes the types of complications and solutions for them.
A woman’s reproductive cycle typically composed of three stages viz., puberty, pregnancy and menopause. The puberty starts with beginning of first menstrual cycle. The reproductive cycle stops with menopause. The hormones secreted by pituitary gland, corpus leuteum, adrenal cortex and ovaries are mainly involved in maintaining various changes occurring during these stages. Many complications occurring during these stages involve the imbalances in the levels of hormones. The diet also has its effects on these complications.Care should be taken regarding diet.
Vitamins, Minerals, Carbohydrates, Proteins, Proteins etc., are to be taken in required amounts to meet the increased demands especially during pregnancy. Likewise the intake of some foods should be reduced or avoided.

Complications and management:
Pregnancy:Many complications arise during pregnancy.
1) Complication: Heartburn
Management: Avoid excessive intake of coffee.
2) Complication: Morning sickness.
Management: Take smaller more frequent meals, not to let the stomach getting empty.
Avoid spicy and fried foods.
Take plain and easily digestible foods such as pasta, potatoes and rice.
Take cereals with milk/cheese or fruits before going to bed at night.
3) Complication: Food craving.
Management: Whenever want to have something chilled, prefer ice milk or low fat frozen yogurt instead of ice creams.
Whenever want to have something crunchy, take baby carrots instead of prawn or potato chips,
Whenever want to have something sweet, choose fresh ,frozen , canned or dry fruits instead of candy , cakes or cookies.
4) Complication: fetal damage
Management: Take folic acid supplements daily.
Avoid smoking and alcohol.
Menopause
1) Complication: Hot flashes.
Management: Reduce the intake of coffee, tea, alcohol, colas, spicy foods and refined sugars.
Increase the amount of water intake to at least 8 glasses a day.
Increase the intake of foods that are rich in phyto estrogens like beans, legumes.Sea weed, yams apples, potatoes and soy.
2) Complication: Mood swinging.
Management: Increase intake of foods rich in serotonin like bagels, sandwiches, whole grain, breads and cereals to elevate depressed mood.
3) Complication: Weight gain.
Management: Reduce intake of saturated fats.
Prefer oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids viz., olive oil, gingerly oil and bran oils.
4) Complications: Heart diseases.
Management: Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables.
Take fish like salmon and mackerel in diet, which contain omege-3 essential fatty acids that help the body to circulate oxygen and blood efficiently. Reduce the amount of saturated fats in diet.
Avoid processed flours and focus on whole grain breads and cereals, and brown or basmati rice instead.
5) Complication: OSTEOPOROSIS
After menopause, as estrogen production decreases, results in much loss of bone mass in the body.
Management:
Increase the intake of food rich in calcium viz., low fat yogurt, milk, soy milk, cheese, sardines, salmon, prunes, figs and leafy green vegetables.
Avoid intake of too much coffee.
Eat healthy, be healthy and make future generation healthy.
